Trivago: Some countries shunning US travel
Travel search site says it has seen a significant downturn in demand for US trips.
Travellers are skipping travel to America for political as well as economic reasons, says Trivago’s CEO, Johannes Thomas.
The company cities double-digit declines in bookings to the US from neighbours Mexico and Canada as well as Japan.
All these have been impacted by ongoing trade disputes.
Trivago also says UK travellers are foregoing trips across the pond for UK staycations due to financial concerns. The same thing is happening in America with more travellers vacationing at home.
“In times of uncertainty, people stay closer to home,” Thomas said.
Demand for US trips by Germans is also well down Trivago says.
However, declines from the UK market has been minimal so far.
The federal government’s National Travel and Tourism Office released data showing visits to the US from overseas were down nearly 12% in March.
