Tropical storms Fay, Gonzalo disrupts Caribbean travel
Tropical storm Fay led to the closure of LF Wade airport in Bermuda and the delay of two cruise ships yesterday.
The airport was closed Sunday to outgoing and incoming air traffic.
The Royal Gazette newspaper reported that the terminal building of LF Wade Airport has experienced major flooding.
Runways had only been open for emergency flights, most flights had been on ‘rolling delays’ and passengers weren’t being allowed through the airport.
Cruise ships The Grandeur of the Seas and the Norwegian Dawn were also due to call at the island but were forced to put back their schedule while final checks on the channels as well as the wharfs were being carried out.
Fay brought trees and utility poles down and several roads were blocked.
Bermuda authorities advised residents to stay at home and not to venture out on the roads.
"The safest thing is for people to remain at home and allow the important work that follows this kind of storm to be done safely," Acting Premier Trevor Moniz said.
Around 27,000 customers – almost half the population – was without power supply late Sunday as Tropical Storm Fay drifted north and briefly strengthened to a hurricane on the open ocean.
Meanwhile the US National Hurricane Center said Tropical Storm Gonzalo will likely become a category 1 hurricane before it hits Puerto Rico early tomorrow.
Tropical storm warnings were posted for St Maarten, Antigua and Barbuda, St Kitts and Nevis, and Montserrat.
After making landfall in Puerto Rico, experts say its trajectory will curve outwards and miss the US Eastern coastline.
The US Coast Guard warned people to stay away from the shoreline starting from midday Monday.
"Tropical Storm Gonzalo is developing quickly," said Guard Capt. Robert Warren.
Gonzalo was expected to move through parts of the Leeward Islands early Monday, lashing it with up to 30 centimeters of rain.
