Trouble in paradise
DENPASAR: Fire destroyed at least eight houses in Klungkung regency, Bali, when hundreds of people went on the rampage on Wednesday.
There have been no reports of casualties but several families lost their homes, according to local reports.
The incident in Tusan village caused some 125 people to be evacuated from their houses fearing that the mob would burn their houses.
Klungkung administration leader Dewa Oka Subawa was quoted by Antara news agency as saying, “Not only residents, whose houses were burned were evacuated, but also those living nearby.”
According to reports, the incident was sparked by a dispute between two communities known as Soroh IB and SD.
Before the Hindu Day of Silence, three members of Soroh IB passed through the areas of Soroh SD with swords in their hands.
Members of Soroh SD considered it a threat to their community and they attacked houses of Soroh IB early Wednesday.
Dewa said more houses would have been burned if police officers had not acted so quickly to sort out the trouble.
