TSA PreCheck program surpasses 10 million enrolments
The Transportation Security Administration’s PreCheck program has finally reached a landmark 10 million members.
The agency announced the milestone after seeing an 18% increase in new membership between March 2019 to February 2020.
TSA opened its first PreCheck enrolment center in December 2013 and now has more than 400 nationwide.
"Today’s milestone is important to aviation security. The more individuals who are enrolled in TSA PreCheck, the more we can focus resources on individuals who more likely pose a risk to aviation security. It’s better security and a better experience for travelers," said TSA Administrator David Pekoske.
TSA reached the milestone more than six months ahead of the October 1, 2020 deadline set out in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018.
However it has taken much longer than originally planned when the service was introduced.
In the past few years it has looked at ways to incentivize travelers to sign up and streamline the enrolment process which involves a face-to-face interview.
PreCheck offers expedited security screening and members do not need to remove shoes, laptops, 3-1-1 liquids, or belts.
According to the agency, nearly 94% of PreCheck passengers waited less than five minutes to pass through screening in January 2020.
Enrolment costs $85 and is good for five years.
