Tucson Tourism Industry Helps ‘Green’ the Desert
Surveys say that nearly half of all travelers try to be “environmentally
friendly” when traveling. Tucson, located in the heart of the Sonoran Desert, beckons groups with blossoming green landscapes, clear skies, fresh air, stunning sunsets and outdoor adventures.
Many earth-friendly options, including a variety of farmers markets featuring local foods, outdoor recreation and attractions, and “green†accommodations,
can all be incorporated into a perfect Tucson itinerary.
Opening in the spring of 2009 in the heart of downtown Tucson, the Mercado San Agustin will be an openair marketplace focusing on local small businesses. The facility will include 100 percent solar-powered exterior lighting, plus roof-mounted photovoltaic systems to reduce dependence on electricity. The Mercado will water plants and trees with an innovative rainwater harvesting system, and landscaping will include low-water native plants.
As part of the Rio Nuevo project, the Mercado San Agustin will be Tucson’s
first public market. A few of the tenants are a Farmer’s Co-op, Flores Market, Casa Martza Restaurante Argentino and Kokopelli Woodworking. The goal is to support the development of future vendors by connecting small business owners with appropriate educational, technical and financial resources.
