Jane Ashton – TUI UK’s Head of Sustainable Development
Europe’s largest leisure company pledges to lead in sustainable development in tourism and reduce carbon footprint.
TUI Travel PLC has just issued its 2008 Sustainable Development Report. The report outlines TUI Travel’s sustainable development strategy and steps towards minimal environmental impact, respect for the culture and people of destinations and real economic benefit to local communities.
Talking to VISION on Sustainable Tourism, Jane Ashton, TUI Travel’s Head of Sustainable Development said “Whilst acknowledging that flying is carbon-intensive, it is worth noting the marked difference in different airlines’ carbon efficiency. In 2007/08 TUI Travel airlines’ fleet emissions averaged 77.9g of carbon dioxide per revenue passenger kilometre (CO2/RPK).”
“Our analysis of other airlines’ carbon data shows leading global scheduled airlines had a range of around 98-133g CO2/RPK, with low-cost airlines performing at around 88-96g CO2/RPK. The main reasons for the difference being load factor, our relatively young fleet, and the wide range of fuel-saving operational procedures we’ve embedded into the way we operate. It would be good to see all airlines reporting their carbon performance, so that customers can make a more informed choice when they fly.”
Talking about TUI’s Greener Holidays brochure, she said “First Choice published Greener Holidays, an on-line brochure promoting more sustainable mainstream holidays, in April 2009 and yes, we plan to publish Summer 2010’s brochure in due course. The brochure features only Travelife-awarded hotels, making it easy for customers to take a more sustainable holiday. Our analysis shows that Travelife-awarded have overall customer satisfaction scores that average 9% higher than the average – in our eyes this highlights a correlation between good sustainability performance and overall good business management.
And about Costa Rica TUI Travel PLC Leadership programme: “Our current leadership development programme involves our Group’s leaders working alongside local people in an eco-tourism business in Costa Rica, providing business expertise and hands-on construction resource to the community. Fifty of our senior managers from across the Group have been on the programme to date, and have experienced
first-hand the challenge of developing a business whilst keeping environmental protection and community benefit top of mind.”
The report says:
- TUI’s carbon footprint decreased 8% in 2007/08 against 2006/07
- TUI is committed to a further 6% reduction in carbon emissions by 2013/14
- TUI Travel’s airlines are markedly more fuel efficient than low cost carriers and scheduled airlines
- 87% of TUI businesses support charitable programmes in destinations
- TUI UK and its customers raised £1.7 million for the World Care Fund
- ‘Greener’ holidays’ are highlighted to help customers make more sustainable holiday choices
- TUI is to Roll out its senior management leadership programme with local eco-tourism business in Costa Rica
Peter Long, Chief Executive, TUI Travel PLC said: “We aspire to lead in sustainable development within the leisure travel industry and want to develop this in the wider marketplace. In the long term, we believe this goal will help build shareholder value for TUI Travel, and contribute to us operating a strong business now and in the future.”
Stephanie Draper, Director, Forum for the Future, comments: “We’re greatly encouraged that in the current economic climate TUI Travel has strengthened its commitment to sustainable tourism – and rightly so. Challenges like climate change and resource constraints will define the sector in the next decade so, taking serious action to address them remains critical strategically. We congratulate TUI Travel on what they have done so far and urge them to respond to this urgency and keep their foot on the accelerator towards a sustainable future.”
