Turkey hit by nationwide power cut
Transport in Turkey was severely impacted yesterday (Tuesday) following a power cut in more than 12 cities across the country.
According to online flight tracking website Flightradar24, the loss of power caused disruption to flights and 11 of 16 its receivers in Turkey went down.
But later reports said airports were not impacted.
The power caused cancellations on the metro system in Istanbul and on train services to and from the Turkish capital of Ankara.
Rescue teams were called to help some passengers who were trapped underground or in lifts.
By Tuesday afternoon, electricity had returned to parts of Istanbul and by 20:40 local time (17:40 GMT) Turkey’s Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said power had been restored across the country.
Officials said they were investigating all possibilities, including terrorism, but later reports said the problem was believed to be technical.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office updated its Turkey travel advice yesterday and warned of ‘considerable disruption’ to transport.
