Turkish Airlines confirms a US$350 million investment in Air Europa
Turkish Airlines has confirmed its bid to take a minority stake in Spain’s Air Europa, sealing a deal worth €300 million (about $350 million).
The agreement, announced on August 19, gives the Istanbul-based carrier roughly 26 to 27% ownership of the Spanish carrier. The investment will be structured first as a loan, later converted into equity once regulators give the green light. The process expects to take six to 12 months.
For Air Europa, the cash injection provides badly needed relief from its €475 million pandemic-era debt. It will help the airline to stabilize its financial situation and strengthen its market position.
Turkish Airlines said the deal aligns with its broader strategy to expand connectivity. Air Europa’s strong presence across Latin America and the Iberian Peninsula is seen as highly complementary to Turkish’s global network, opening new opportunities in both passenger and cargo traffic.
The move also underscores Turkish Airlines’ ambitions to solidify its role as a global aviation heavyweight. By tying itself to Air Europa, the carrier gains a stronger foothold in southern Europe and in the EU. While helping its Spanish partner remain competitive against larger European rivals.
