Turks and Caicos blocks cruise ship call due to illness outbreak
A Princess Cruises ship was denied docking in the Turks and Caicos due to an illness outbreak.
The Enchanted Princess ship was denied just 30 minutes before its scheduled arrival at Grand Turk.
The Turks and Caicos government reviewed the Maritime Health Declaration (MDH) the ship had submitted.
It noted at least 50 cases of illness onboard.
The Islands’ Ministry of Health said it included cases of ‘acute respiratory illness, influenza, and acute gastroenteritis.’
The health Ministry undertook a public health risk assessment and decided not to let the ship dock.
“The health and safety of our residents and visitors remain the top priority. While we welcome cruise tourism, we must act decisively when public health is at risk,” Minister of Health and Human Services, Kyle Knowles said.
“This decision was made following a careful risk assessment and is in line with International Health Regulations.”
The Grand Turk call was the final stop on the Enchanted Princess’ itinerary.
It arrives back at Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday morning and will receive a comprehensive deep clean.
The cruise line has informed booked passengers on the next cruise of a slightly later embarkation time.
“During the previous voyage, a small number of guests reported gastrointestinal illness. As an extra precaution, the ship will undergo additional disinfection in Fort Lauderdale,” the cruise line said in an emailed letter to guests.
