TV crew arrested trying to sneak fake bomb on flight
Seven members of a cable TV news crew have been arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport after trying to sneak a fake explosive through security.
According to NJ.com, a film crew contracted by US cable network CNBC attempted to smuggle a PVC pipe with wires sticking out of it in a carry-on bag while covertly filming.
Transport Security Administration officers detected the item and the crew was promptly arrested.
They were later charged with causing false public alarm, conspiracy and interfering with transportation, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
The item had ‘all the makings of an improvised explosive device’, the TSA said.
The crew was from Endemol Shine, a Netherlands based production company.
CNBC declined to comment, but Julie Holland, spokeswoman for Endemol Shine North America, apologised.
"We are looking into the details of what happened as a matter of priority and are in contact with relevant authorities on the ground.
"While this process is ongoing we are unable to comment further but in the meantime, we sincerely apologise for any disruption caused," she said.
Lisa Farbstein, acting director of TSA media relations said: ""The preliminary investigation indicates that all were in collaboration and claimed to be working for a television network."
The crew members could also face civil penalties of up to $13,000 for each charge.
