Two British women drown on holiday in Spanish resort
The bodies of two British women have been found two miles from the popular Spanish beach resort where they went for a late night swim on Wednesday.
Lisa Coggins and Tracey Aston, both in their 30s, were in Lloret de Mar, on the Costa Brava, with three other friends from Birmingham when they decided to go to the beach in the early hours of the morning despite the stormy conditions.
One of the pair allegedly went for a swim, ignoring the warnings of locals at a nearby bar, and the other went to try and rescue her when she got into difficulties.
A search party was scrambled when one of the group raised the alarm at 4.40am and local coastguards dispatched a helicopter and a boat to look for the women, however authorities say 15 foot waves hampered the search.
Their bodies were spotted by a helicopter search team on Thursday, two miles from Lloret. They were taken to the nearby town of Blanes.
The UK Foreign Office said it was providing support to their families.
"We can confirm the death of two British nationals who had been reported missing in Lloret de Mar on 1 October," an Foreign Office spokesman said.
"We are providing support to the families and those who were travelling with the individuals at this difficult time."
The women, who have not been named, went missing near a landmark monument known locally as Dona Marinera – Sailor’s Wife.
Some reports suggested one of the women who drowned went for a swim with a friend and both got into difficulties. Her friend managed to get out of the sea but a third woman who went in to save her also drowned.
