Uber driver charged with killing spree says car-share app was controlling him
The Uber driver accused of killing six people on a shooting spree in Michigan has told police he felt he was being controlled by the Uber app.
Jason Dalton, 45, is charged with shooting eight people on February 20, killing six of them during a five-hour period.
He told investigators the smartphone app told him to kill his victims.
“When I logged onto [the Uber app], it started making me feel like a puppet,” he said.
He said when he looked at the app on his phone, the horned cow head of a devil would appear and give him an assignment.
The comments were in documents made public in response to a local television station’s Freedom of Information Act request.
Although none of the victims were Uber customers, Dalton allegedly continued to pick up passengers in between the shooting spree in Kalamazoo, a small city about 150 miles west of Detroit.
At the time of the shooting, Uber confirmed Dalton had passed background checks and had no criminal record.
