Uber luring new driver recruits with gaming
Taxi hailing app Uber is taking a different approach to attracting more drivers with the launch of a smartphone based video game for recruits to test their skills on the road.
Exclusively on the iOS platform, UberDrive allows users to transport passengers from A to B on a real map of San Francisco, while earning cash credits to unlock more features.
Uber is hoping the game will spark the interest of users who have not considered working as a Uber driver.
Within the game interface, users can sign up to become drivers and upload personal details.
The game also displays information about landmarks and attractions in San Francisco in order to educate drivers and ‘hone navigation skills.’
It may also be appealing simply for visiting tourists to plan a day of sightseeing in the city.
The game was developed as a side project by Uber employee Mike Truong and Uber says it has only made a small investment in the project.
If it takes off, Uber plans to expand the game to other cities.
