UK tourist arrivals to Gothenburg surge
The UK is now one of the fastest growing markets for visitation to Gothenburg, Sweden.
Overnight stays from the UK rose by 24% year-on-year, reaching 111,696 guest nights between January and December 2025.
The UK now ranks as Gothenburg’s second fastest-growing international market, behind the Netherlands, which saw a 32% increase.
Other key growth markets include Norway (15%), the US (13%) and Denmark (11%).
In total, Gothenburg recorded more than 6.1 million guest nights in 2025, with domestic tourism accounting for 4.2 million guest nights, up 5% year-on-year.
“A 24% rise in UK guest nights shows that Gothenburg’s positioning as a sustainable city is resonating strongly,” said Peter Grönberg, CEO of Göteborg & Co.
“The UK market is one of our most important international markets, and with new developments including the UN Sustainable Lifestyle Hub and major infrastructure investment, we are entering a new phase of growth.”
This year marks its first as a UN Hub for Sustainable Lifestyles – a two-year assignment reinforcing its reputation as a low-impact urban destination.
This year sees several high-profile openings in Gothenburg.
It includes the launch of Gothenburg View, a new 69th floor observation deck and restaurant in Karlatornet, which is the tallest building in the Nordic region.
Looking ahead, major infrastructure investment will further strengthen Gothenburg’s accessibility.
The £86 million Gothenburg Grand Central station, part of the wider West Link Project, is scheduled to open in late 2026/early 2027.
The project will introduce three new underground stations and create a new city district, Centralstaden.
