UK visits to US at five-year high
The number of British tourists visiting the US is reportedly at a five-year high because of the strength of sterling against the US dollar.
According to the government statistics office, the number of Britons visiting the US grew by 18% to around 610,000 – the highest total since 1999.
By contrast, visitors by UK tourists to western European grew by just one per cent to 4.6 million.
The news provider Bloomberg quotes ABTA’s Sean Tipton as saying: “It’s the weakness of the dollar. People do follow these things and it makes America a very attractive destination.”
The pound has risen in value against the dollar by around eight per cent since the start of the year.
