UKinbound is reporting a buoyancy amongst its members at the start of World Travel Market, caused by a buzz around the London Olympics and an abundance of good value product.
The association says its membership has grown by 25% this year and that all are determined to capitalise on the 2012 Olympic Games and the massive influx of tourists it will bring, having also enjoyed a prosperous summer this year.
But UKinbound chief executive Mary Rance cautioned that there were still some serious hurdles ahead, with the recent rise in APD and an “uncertainty” surrounding the government’s tourism strategy.
She also warned that the 2012 Olympics could bring some challenges to the industry.
She said: “There has been much scaremongering about the Olympic effect. But the UK is completely different from previous host countries, both in terms of our ease of access and our intrinsic strengths, while the infrastructure improvements generated by the 2012 Games will make us even more attractive in the long term.
“We have more than enough capacity here and we need to reassure potential visitors that they can enjoy this fantastic, dynamic destination just as much in 2012, if not even more so.”
The association is working alongside VisitBritain, Visit London and the European Tour Operators’ Association to ensure the right signals are sent out about Britain as it gears up to host the Games, namely that it is not too expensive and it won’t be too crowded.
