United Airlines backs down on plan to replace employee bonuses with ‘lottery’
United Airlines has grounded a plan to replace employee bonuses with a lottery-style giveaway.
United said the plan is on hold after it stoked the ire of workers.
The ‘exciting new rewards program’ was to have replaced quarterly bonuses with the chance to win $100,000, vacation packages and even a luxury car.
It was roundly criticized by workers’ feedback.
It was described as a ‘morale killing program’ by one pilot while a flight attendant said: "This sounds like a game show with cash prizes and let’s see who gets the spin of the wheel. This doesn’t sound like a plan that even attempts to show value, respect and appreciation for the work of its employees."
It would have been available only to workers with a perfect attendance record and when the airline met certain performance targets.
Now United says it was a ‘misjudgement.’
"We are pressing the pause button on these changes to review your feedback and consider the right way to move ahead. We will be reaching out to work groups across the company and the changes we make will better reflect your feedback," president Scott Kirby said in a memo.
