United Airlines mulling outsourcing 2,000 jobs
As United Airlines considers more job outsourcing across the nation, a petition has been started demanding the resignation of United CEO Jeff Smisek.
A Change.org petition has been posted by ‘Our UnitedRetired’ – a ‘dedicated group of active employees and retirees of United Airlines’ urging Smisek to step down.
The group says the main issue is the outsourcing of jobs which it calls ‘a cancer that must be stopped.’
The airline has informed up to 2,000 workers at 28 airports across the company that their jobs are being reviewed and may be outsourced to outside contractors.
Jobs under threat include baggage handlers and gate service agents which are represented by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers unions.
The petition cited the ongoing problems at Denver airport as an example of things to come, which has resulted in missing luggage and delayed flights since December.
Passengers have waited up to a week for misplaced bags to be delivered to their homes.
