United.com snafu yields $0 fares
United joined the ranks of low-fare airlines for a couple of hours yesterday, when it accidentally loaded $0 fares into its computer system and sold them on its website.
Even with airport charges, some passengers — United said it doesn’t know exactly how many — got tickets for just $5 or $10.
Word spread on Twitter; United got wind of what was happening and shut the website down after about 15 minutes.
The site was back up — and so were the prices — by about 2:30 pm.
United said it has not yet decided if it will honor the tickets.
