United closing down Seattle base
After losing market share, United Airlines will close its Seattle base, affecting 264 flight attendants based at Sea-Tac.
United is in discussions with Association of Flight Attendants union officials to relocate flight crews to San Francisco.
"We recognize that closing any domicile places a hardship on those who live in that location," the airline said in a statement addressed to AFA union officials.
United added that keeping a base in Seattle ‘simply does not make economic sense.’
United has been the main loser in a battle for market share at Sea-Tac beween Delta and dominant Seattle-based carrier Alaska Airlines.
Latest data shows United’s share of traffic at the airport fell 7% over the last 12 months.
The carrier also recently announced deep cuts in winter services nationwide.
United spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said: "There will be a reduced domestic and international schedule but we’re not announcing any further changes to our flights going forward."
