Unlawfully fired Qantas workers to get Christmas payout

Fired Qantas workers will get an initial payment before Christmas as red tape holdsup their court approved payout for being illegally fired.

Qantas was ordered to pay $120 million into a compensation fund for losing the case which ruled the airline unlawfully fired hundreds of ground workers in favour of outsourcing.

The payment has been delayed more than a year.

A judge has now approved a $3,333 interim payment for each fired worker for non economic loss.

The workers were dismissed over five years ago.

The administrator in charge of distributing the payouts said many workers have complained about the delay.

More than 1,800 employees were impacted by Qantas’ decision to bring in outsourced labour.

The TWU union. which successfully brought the case, welcomed the court’s move to approve the initial payment.
