UPDATED: Police shoot suspect in massive man-hunt after failed London bombings
A suspected suicide bomber was shot dead by police today at Stockwell Underground station in London.
The shooting of the suspect by armed police followed attempted bombings on the London Underground and a bus yesterday lunchtime – seen as failed attempts to wreak further death and destruction in the capital.
Eyewitnesses today said a number of shots were fired after the suspect appeared at the door of a train.
Tube lines were suspended and passengers evacuated following yesterday’s incidents at The Oval, Warren Street and Shepherds Bush and on a bus in east London. There was further disruption to tube services today after the Stockwell incident.
Police issued CCTV images of four men suspected of leaving devices on the four Underground trains and the No. 26 bus in Hackney and appealed for public support.
Three houses were also raided by police today as part of a “fast moving” investigation, according to Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair.
Only one casualty was reported yesteday as a number of devices failed to go off, leaving vital evidence for police in the massive man-hunt for the would-be bombers.
The incidents came two weeks to the day since terrorist attacks on London on July 7 in which 56 people died.
Concern is now being raised about the impact on inbound tourism to London withn suggestions of a notable drop-off in bookings following the attacks of two weeks ago.
Mayor Ken Livingston is reported to have ordered VisitLondon to try and increase the number of visitors from the UK and Europe to make up for a potential drop in American tourists.
