US bans ‘unsafe’ African aircraft
An African airline has been banned from landing in the US on safety grounds.
The US Federal Aviation Administration says Ghana Airways has been flying aircraft that are not airworthy and has been operating with a licence that has expired.
The American action, reported by BBC News, has hit at least one flight so far. A scheduled return trip service from Ghana’s capital Accra, due to fly to JFK airport in New York on Tuesday night, was cancelled. The African state airline runs four round trips to the US every week.
According to the report, there have been two cases when the airline continued to fly an aircraft that had been grounded for safety reasons. The airline’s operating licence is said to have expired earlier this month.
A spokesman for the US transportation department is quoted as saying: “Ghana Airways’ recent actions have raised serious questions regarding safety and licensing, which must be answered before the airline will be allowed to resume service to and from the United States.”
The spokesman added it was the first time action like this had been taken on safety grounds.
