US carrier introduces Android app

American Airlines has introduced an app for customers with phones using Android technology.
The carrier already has iPhone and iPad apps, which more than a million people have downloaded, and is now continuing its push to sell through smart phones.
Senior vice president technology and chief information officer Monte Ford said: “By definition, our customers are mobile and are increasingly reliant on mobile devices that enable them to stay well connected wherever they are.
“We believe the right mobile technology can and will dramatically improve our customers’ and employees’ experience with American. As a result, our mobile technology strategy is aggressive and a key consideration in every technology initiative at the company today. It is our intention to lead the airline industry related to mobile computing.”
The new app will let customers check in for flights, get gate, seat and flight status information and view terminal maps. It also only requires log in details once so that new information can appear automatically on the home screen.
It will save a passenger’s boarding pass, making it easier to find, will monitor the standby list and will track elite status progress.
It has a GPS system to locate the nearest airport served by American – and it lets you play Sudoku.
Managing director American Airlines interactive marketing Rick Elieson said: “One in four smartphone owners are now using an Android device. Not only does this meet the needs of many of our customers while they’re on the move, it also paves the way for innovation on other devices that use the Android platform.”
