US flights cancelled as northeast region braces for snow storm

Friday, 13 Mar, 2018 0

Airlines have collectively cancelled nearly 1,500 flights to and from airports in the northeast of the US and waived change fees as the region is braced for another icy blast.

The hardest hit area is likely to be Boston, where about two thirds of all Tuesday flights wre cancelled.

Up to two feet of snow is expected to be dumped on parts of New England, which will also be battered by high winds causing possible power outages.

Heavy snow could make travel ‘near-impossible,’ the National Weather Service said.

American Airlines and Southwest Airlines said they will suspend all flight operations at Boston.

Winter Storm Skylar is the third to hit the northeast of the US in less than a month.

Last week airlines scrapped more than 2,400 flights due to Winter Storm Quinn.

Waivers have been issued for all major carriers including JetBlue, Delta, United and American Airlines for flights in and out of airports from Maine to Pennsylvania.

More than a dozen airports in the region are significantly affected.
