US on verge of allowing Cuban travel?
Some members of the US Congress are leading an effort to remove the travel ban to Cuba — which would open up the area to strong tourist demand.
Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., introduced a bill to lift the 40-year-old travel ban from the US. Cuba is the only country in the world where Americans are banned.
Many tourism industry groups have long supported the lifting of the ban in order to give tour operators and others the ability to package products to Cuba as the rest of the world does.
How strong Congressional support may be is not known, but the anti-Cuban forces in Florida have a long-standing lobby that has rebutted any such moves in the past few decades. Still, some congressional insiders say the timing is right.
