US State Department expands Mexico travel advisory

The US State Department amended its travel advisory for Mexico vacations in two states.

The State Department warned of increasing gun violence in Quintana Roo state which includes the vacation hotspots of Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

While it is mostly targeted among criminal organizations, violent crime has started to encroach in areas frequented by U.S. citizens.

"Shooting incidents, in which innocent bystanders have been injured or killed, have occurred," it says in its state-by-state assessments.

There were two deadly shootings within the resort areas of Cancun and Playa del Carmen earlier this year.

Quintana Roo welcomes about 10 million tourists each year.

The state tourism ministry issued a statement assuring travelers they will be ‘safe and protected.’

It updates a previous advisory from December 2016.

A similar advisory was also issued for Baja California Sur, which is home to the ever popular Cabo San Lucas.

Earlier this month three people were shot and killed near a popular Los Cabos beach.
