US teens lap up the London Olympics
US broadcaster NBC has revealed that in the first seven days of coverage of the 2012 London Olympic Games, overall viewership is up double digits among teens and teenage girls.
Maybe it’s something to do with all those hunky swimmers but overall viewership for teen girls, 12-17, is up 54% vs. Beijing.
Teen viewership of the London Games is more than six times higher than traditional broadcast viewing habits and teen girl ratings for NBC’s coverage of the London Olympics is 89% higher than the No. 1 rated primetime show on broadcast television in the same demographic (Glee/FOX), the official release said.
Through the same seven day time period, 174.9 million Americans watched the Olympics on the networks of NBCUniversal, ahead of Beijing’s 174.1 at the same point through the Games.
Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has revealed that the London 2012 Games is set to reach a global audience of 4.8 billion.
The number is up from 4.5 billion for the Beijing 2008 Games.
The IOC also said that London 2012 had heralded a ‘new era for Olympic broadcasting’ due to a record number of hours of sport coverage by broadcasters, and a worldwide explosion in consumption online and on mobile.
By the end of the Games, official broadcasters are expected to screen more than 100,000 hours of footage. This will be eclipsed by the number of hours streamed on websites and mobile sites.
