US tourist killed by lion in SA safari park
An American tourist was mauled to death at a South African safari park when a lion apparently jumped into her vehicle through an open window.
The incident happened Monday at a safari park on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
The 22-year old woman, whose name has not been released, died while being treated by paramedics, said Lion Park assistant director of operations Scott Simpson.
Her traveling companion was a South African tour guide, who sustained injuries during the attack.
"The gentleman sustained some injuries to his arm as he was fighting the lion off inside the car. Our staff rushed over immediately and chased the lion away from the car," Simpson said.
"We tell all our visitors to close their windows at all times for safety reasons. From what we understand the windows of the sedan were open," he added.
"We have signage up everywhere informing people to keep their windows closed. We hand out flyers as they are driving in, reminding them to keep their windows closed. We really do everything we can to make sure that people know that."
Early this year an Australian visitor was bitten by a lion while driving through the park, also through an open window on the vehicle
