US warning: ‘All of us have a date with Omicron’
Omicron has now taken over as the dominant Covid in the US.
It has taken less than three weeks since the Omicron variant was first detected in the country.
The Centers for Disease Control says the variant’s share of all Covid infections over the past week has surged nearly six times.
It now makes up 73% of all new infections, the CDC said.
In New York City alone, over 15,000 cases were reported Monday.
"These numbers are stark, but they’re not surprising," CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky said.
President Joe Biden will address the nation today and outline how ‘communities in need of assistance.’ will be helped.
The sheer speed of Omicron has actually been quite surprising with the first confirmed Omicron related death reported just yesterday.
The US is averaging about 130,000 new cases a day.
One expert says there is no escape from Omicron.
"All of us have a date with Omicron," said Dr Amesh Adalja of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.
"If you’re going to interact with society, if you’re going to have any type of life, Omicron will be something you encounter, and the best way you can encounter this is to be fully vaccinated."
