Venice to ban trolley cases
Italian officials want to ban visitors from using trolley cases in Venice due to the noise and wear and tear on its cobbled streets.
City officials are considering introducing fines of up to 500 euros for anyone floating the ban if approved.
Italian newspaper Il Messaggero said the new rules, which will require luggage to be transported on quieter air-filled tires, are the idea of City Commissioner Victor Zapparlorto.
The ruling, due to come into effect in May 2015, will affect the 22 million people who annually visit the city and struggle to take luggage to hotels in car-free streets.
It adds that it will be written into the local building code and therefore legally binding.
A statement on the Venetian council’s website said the plan was drawn up to appease the city’s residents, reports the BBC.
"The rule is designed to respond to the numerous citizens who have in recent years complained to the local council about the serious irritation caused by stuff being moved about at times of the day and night," it said.
