Victoria Tourism sets records
Victoria has recorded its highest ever number of international visitors, according to the latest International Visitor Survey.
There was a five percent increase in visitor numbers to Victoria for the year to June 2006, for a record total of 1.4 million international visitors.
“The success of the 2006 Commonwealth Games played an important role with strong numbers from Commonwealth countries compared to the previous year,” State Tourism Minister John Pandazopoulos said.
“Significantly, for the year to June 2006, international visitor nights grew 21 percent (to 30 million nights) compared to the year to June 2005,” he said.
“Our strategy to increase length of stay, which results in greater spending by tourists, is working. Visitors for the year to June 2006 stayed for 21.5 nights compared to 18.7 nights in 2005.”
The biggest increase in visitor nights to Victoria was from China, up 53 percent from 2.5 million to 3.8 million nights. China is forecast to become the state’s largest source market in less than 10 years.
