WA braces for Cyclone Glenda

Voluntary evacuations have begun in northern Western Australia as Cyclone Glenda approaches the state’s Pilbara region.

Residents in low-lying areas of Karratha, Roeburn and Wickham had been warned of flooding caused by tidal surges, emergency services spokesman Peter Masini said yesterday.

“We’ve advised them they would be better off staying on higher ground at a friend’s place or in one of the emergency shelters available,” Mr Masini said.

“Some have moved already and others will go first thing (Thursday).”

Gales with gusts to 100kph were expected to develop on the Pilbara coast overnight, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

The Weather Bureau is warning it will bring wind gusts of more than 200 kilometres an hour.

Steve Cable from the SES in Karratha says the winds could cause the sea level to rise five metres above high tide, and flood houses in low lying areas.

“We could have a storm surge inundations which will be very, very high,” he said.
