Warning to Pakistan travellers
Travellers to Karachi in Pakistan have been put on alert after fresh outbreaks of sectarian violence there.
The warning was spelled out by the UK Foreign Office yesterday following two bomb blasts in separate mosques in the city.
In a statement, the Foreign Office told potential visitors: “If visiting Karachi, you should take particular care, avoid travelling on foot and travel in vehicles only between secure, well-guarded premises. You should keep away from all places of worship in Karachi.’
The information is being passed to passed to the resident British community in Pakistan as well as being issued to travellers.
Pakistan has a number of militant Islamic groups, some of which have been blamed for the recent violence. In all this year, 150 people have been killed in a series of attacks in Karachi, with places of worship the principal targets. In two separate incidents in May, bombs exploded in mosques, resulting in about 35 deaths and nearly 250 injuries.
