Wave of change
Majorcan hotel group takes holistic action towards plastic
Iberostar has launched a new initiative titled Wave of Change, designed to not only deliver a sustainable experience to their hotel guests but to unite employees, suppliers, customers and society as a whole to grow the sustainable tourism industry.
A fundamental part of this new initiative is the reduction of plastic waste. This not only applies to products and services relevant to end-consumers, but to their entire supply chain from third party suppliers to their own headquarters.
In a bid to reduce the amount of plastic deposited into seas and oceans every year, Iberostar became the first hotel chain whose rooms in Spain were complete free of single-use-plastic, a commitment which will extend to the company’s more than 120 hotels across the globe.
To achieve this, working with environmentally conscious suppliers is imperative in ensuring that Iberostar’s own eco-system is sustainable. The business works with carefully selected third parties to provide the delivery of sustainable products to their hotels. The likes of dispensers made up of 100 per cent recycled plastic and multi-use recyclables, plant-based bags, ecological wrist bands and packaging for mini-bar products will mean that Iberostar alone will eliminate 300 tonnes of waste each year in Spain
To ensure that the corporate headquarters of the Majorcan tourist group is completely aligned with the initiatives carried out in its hotels, Iberostar has eliminated all single-use plastics in the refurbishment of its headquarters and plastic water bottles have been completely replaced by reusable stainless-steel bottles. This will prevent more than 45,000 bottles annually from generating 1.35 tonnes of plastic waste.
