WestJet drop US routes for summer
WestJet is suspending several transborder routes to the US due to ongoing weak demand.
The airline says it will halt nine routes to the US this summer.
Canadians are ditching plans to travel south amid a strained relationship with the US over politics.
US President Trump continues to push for Canada becoming the 51st American state while tariffs have irked Canadians.
There is also concerns over unfriendly immigration procedures which has seen many foreign travelers held or deported for spurious reasons.
“WestJet recently suspended planned flying to nine transborder routes for various portions of the summer schedule,” the airline said.
Many of these routes include major tourism hubs like Orlando and Las Vegas.
Some are suspended in June such as Winnipeg to Orlando, while Kelowna – Seattle and Winnipeg– Los Angeles are suspended from June through August.
The Edmonton to Atlanta and Winnipeg to Las Vegas routes are suspended in July and August.
“WestJet continuously evaluates and adjusts its schedule to meet demand, and we remain committed to reviewing opportunities for direct service on these routes in the future,” an airline spokesperson said.
