Where to send clients for (almost) guaranteed snow
It’s been a good start to the ski season so far with plenty of snow in most Alpine resorts, but we seem to have hit a dry spell and with no fresh snow forecast for the next few days some slopes are going to start to look patchy, so if you don’t want disappointed clients on your hands, here’s some snow-sure resorts you should be looking at:
Obergurgl, Austria
It’s not the biggest or the best-known resort in the Alps, but Obergurgl does have an impressive snow record. The resort is featured by many UK ski operators, including Inghams which has seven-night packages this month starting from under £400 including flights, transfers and chalet-style accommodation.
Val D’Isere, France
Heavy investment in snow-making facilities, combined with its lofty altitude and easy access to the neighbouring high-rise resort of Tignes and the Grand Mottes glacier means virtually guaranteed skiing in Val d’Isere. Its closest airport is Chambery, but as highlighted last weekend, this airport is more prone to flight disruption than others in the Alps so consider Lyon or Grenoble instead. Crystal Ski has seven-night self-catering packages, departing on Saturday, January 18, from £563 per person, including flights and transfers.
Val Thorens, France
The highest resort in Europe, if anywhere has snow, it’s likely to be Val T. More likely to suffer from too much than too little snow, the resort is part of the vast 3 Valleys ski area, so it should definitely be top of the list for those looking for guaranteed piste time. Skiworld has a seven-night chalet package from £424 per person, departing on Sunday.
La Rosiere, France
Even though many of its slopes are south-facing, and so can often be icy early in the morning due to afternoon thaw followed by overnight freezing, this family-favourite does tend to get more than its fair share of snowfall. And if the slopes are looking a bit patchy, clients can always ski over to the Italian side of the mountain where the north-facing slopes of La Thuile hold the snow much better. Family ski specialist Esprit has seven-night chalet packages from £699 per adult, departing on January 19.
Zermatt, Switzerland
This one is going to hit clients in the pocket, but if money is no object, they might want to consider skiing the glaciers of Zermatt, which are open even in the summer. And if Mother Nature doesn’t oblige, the resort has plenty of snow-making facilities. The resort is featured by several operators, including Powder Byrne and Ski Safari, with prices available on request.
That said, if your clients are looking for fresh powder, their best bet right now is to head to Scandinavia. The latest weather forecasts suggest Geilo and Hemesdal in Norway are likely to get the best snowfall over the coming days.
