Wi-Fi connections arrive early on GNER trains
East Coast rail operator GNER has completed the £3.2 million installation of wireless internet to its entire train fleet seven months early.
First Class passengers have free access to Wi-Fi, while in Standard Class the system operates on a ‘pay-as you-go’ basis, similar to an internet café. Prices are: 30 minutes’ use £2.95, 60 minutes’ use £4.95 ,120 minutes’ use £7.95, up to 24 hours’ use £9.95.
All 41 of GNER’s trains now have Wi-Fi on board offering passengers the ability to surf the internet and send and receive email throughout the East Coast main line route.
The project was due to be completed in May 2007 but has been finished ahead of schedule.
Wi-Fi is now available on all GNER journeys, including London to Inverness, the longest route at 580 miles.
GNER trains send and receive communications signals via a combination of a roof-mounted satellite dish and mobile phone antenna, using 3G and GPRS technology. Each coach along the entire length of the train is then connected via an on board wireless network to create a Wi-Fi ‘hot-spot’ throughout every coach on the train.
The company’s CEO Jonathan Metcalfe said: “Wireless internet has immense potential for both business and leisure users, and we’re very encouraged by the usage levels and positive feedback from passengers.”
