Widespread outrage over P&O Ferries sackings
P&O Ferries is taking heat from all sides over the abrupt sacking of 800 staff in a ‘fire and rehire’ move.
P&O made the ‘tough’ decision as it is no longer a ‘viable business’ without radical changes.
The government called it ‘wholly unacceptable’ while unions are outraged.
The RMT union threatened legal action for one of the ‘most shameful acts in the history of British industrial relations.’
“Reports of workers being given zero notice and escorted off their ships… shows the insensitive way in which P&O have approached this issue,” said Robert Courts, parliamentary under-secretary for transport.
P&O Ferries said it is suspending services for ‘a week to 10 days’ while they hire new crew.
“The government must do everything it can to ensure that this appalling employment transaction cannot be completed. Concern remains as to whether this is lawful,” Huw Merriman MP, chair of the transport committee tweeted.
“We made a £100m loss year on year, which has been covered by our parent DP World. This is not sustainable. Without these changes there is no future for P&O Ferries,” the company said.
