Williams, Sharapova heading for Brisbane International
Newly crowned US Open champion Serena Williams and 2012 French Open champion Maria Sharapova have signed on for the Brisbane International 2013.
Thirty-year-old Williams reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 Brisbane event but withdrew prior to the match with a left ankle sprain.
World No.2 Sharapova is set to make her first appearance at the Brisbane International in January.
In 2012, Sharapova reached the final of the Australian Open, won the French Open, and carried the flag for the Russian Olympic team in London.
Sharapova has won 27 WTA singles titles and in 2011 was named Forbes’ highest-paid female athlete.
Brisbane International tournament director, Cameron Pearson, said, “These global superstars are an exciting addition to our player field, which of course already includes Andy Murray – the newly crowned US Open men’s singles champion."
Brisbane International 2013, presented by Suncorp, will take place at the Queensland Tennis Centre, Brisbane, from December 30 to January 6.
Brisbane International 2013 series packages will go on sale on Wednesday, October 3 and single ticket sales one week later.
