Worldspan strengthens e-commerce strategy with Priceline deal
Worldspan and priceline.com today announced a long-term worldwide technology agreement making Worldspan the preferred GDS powering the priceline.com travel pricing and reservations service.
Under the new agreement, Worldspan will also provide priceline.com with substantial product development resources, enabling priceline.com to utilize their travel technology, such as Worldspan ePricing(SM) and Worldspan Hotel Select.
Worldspan has provided transaction processing and other e-commerce services for priceline.com since 1998.
Commenting on the new deal with priceline.com, Paul J. Blackney, president and chief executive officer for Worldspan, said: “Our new agreement with priceline.com comes at a fitting time, reaffirming our shared confidence in the recovery of the travel industry in 2002 and beyond.
He added: “Our partnership with priceline.com has been and will continue to be a cornerstone of Worldspan’s success in e-commerce.”
Mike Parks, senior vice president and general manager – Worldwide Travel Distribution for Worldspan, said: “Our steady expansion in the electronic travel arena has enabled Worldspan to focus greater attention on the needs of e-commerce customers than any other global distribution system.”
Yesterday, at the Eyefortravel Business e-Business Travel Show at Olympia, London, Tim Wright, staff vice president EMEA, Worldspan, explained to TravelMole that Worldspan is dedicated to developing its e-commerce strategy, but that it should not be seen as a threat to travel agents.
Mr Wright explained that Worldspan is developing an e-commerce strategy so that it can work “in partnership with travel agents”. See also: 07-Feb-02 Worldspan: ‘Business Travel Partnerships hold the key’
