WTM to run World Responsible Tourism Day
Word Travel Market has won United Nations backing for the World Responsible Tourism Day to be held at next year’s show.
The initiative will be run in association with the World Tourism Organization, a UN agency, on November 14, 2007.
Support has come from Virgin group founder Sir Richard Branson and environmentalist David Bellamy. Industry backing has come from the WTTC, PATA and the International Centre for Responsible Tourism.
The event will be repeated on November 12, 2008 and November 11, 2009.
A programme of events, workshops, seminars and debates will be run on the day.
WTM managing director Fiona Jeffery said: “It means the travel industry can show en masse that it is actively making a difference in protecting environments, respecting local cultures, supporting local communities, conserving natural resources and minimising pollution.”
