Yasawa Wins in Condé Nast Johansens Awards
Fiji’s Yasawa Island Resort has won a top international accolade in the prestigious Condé Nast Johansens awards for 2006, announced yesterday at a gala event in New York.
The exclusive retreat was chosen over three others for the Most Excellent Romantic Hideaway title in the 2006 Americas Awards for Excellence.
Yasawa was the only South Pacific winner in the awards, which involved 18 categories and 60 nominees from the Americas and islands of the Pacific, Caribbean and Atlantic.
Yasawa Island Resort’s Australian owner Garth Downey said the award was the most prestigious ever bestowed on the resort.
“An award like this is a great honour and a tribute to the people of Yasawa Island who make this such a special place,” Mr Downey said. “It’s fantastic to have recognition from one of the world’s most discerning guides.”
Hidden in the most remote and unspoilt of the Fiji Islands, Yasawa Island Resort is a luxury retreat of just 18 bures, or bungalows, on a stretch of pristine white beach. There are no other resorts on the island and the only neighbours are in a handful of mainly traditional villages nearby.
Each bure at Yasawa is superbly decorated in contemporary Fijian style, with thatched roofs, timber plantation shutters, private sundecks, private beach huts, outdoor showers, day beds and hammocks strung between the palms.
Condé Nast Johansens is the international luxury travel guide to premium resorts, hotels, and spas from the “most trusted name in travel,” Condé Nast Publications.
Nominations for the awards were selected from the 285 properties featured in the 2006 Recommended Hotels, Inns, Resorts & Spa – The Americas, Atlantic, Caribbean, Pacific by the Condé Nast Johansens team of inspectors, readers, and hotel guests. Guests made their suggestions online or by completing one of the Award for Excellence cards available at all Condé Nast Johansens Recommended accommodations.
