Mexico: Emergency declared as blazes hit popular areas of country

Parts of Mexico have been hit by dozens of severe forest fires that are turning some parts of the country into disaster areas.

The frequently-visited states of Yucatan and Campeche are worst-affected, with Yucatan reporting that some 16,000 acres of grassland have already been lost to the fires. While there have been no injuries or deaths related to the fires, there is serious concern as many village have been evacuated.

In Campeche state there are fire alerts in four separate townships. Temperatures across the Yucatan have been reported to have reached 44 degrees Centigrade – 111 degrees Fahrenheit – in what is normally the hottest part of the year.

Meteorological experts say the extreme weather may be a result of the El Nino phenomenon, according to the Sky News website.
