‘Zombies’ block Westboro church protest at Washington military base
A group of 300 counter-protestors dressed as members of the living dead lined up across the street from picketers from the Westboro Baptist Church on Friday at a DuPont, Washington Military base.
The Westboro group were particularly incensed at Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos’ recent donation of $2.5 million to support gay marriage in Washington, which was legalized but is now facing opposition in the state. The group regularly picket military funerals, claiming troops’ deaths are directly related to US support for gay rights.
The Zombie group was organized by 27-year-old Melissa Neace who organized the ‘undead’ protestors through a Facebook group called, ‘Zombie’ing Westboro Baptist Church AWAY from Fort Lewis!’
Joint Base Lewis-McChord is a military base south of Seattle.
The zombies numbered about 300, while the Westboro group had only a handful of protestors.
One of the ‘zombies’ told KIRO-TV: "I think that their message is very hateful and Jesus was not a hateful person. He loved everybody."
