The tri-island nation of Grenada is set to make waves in both the art and marine worlds with the grand opening of its latest attraction, A World Adrift: a stunning underwater sculpture park off the shores of Carriacou. Created by world-renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor, this extraordinary installation represents a harmonious blend of cultural celebration and environmental stewardship. The sculptures will begin to be placed in the soon-to-be designated marine protected area of Jackadan from October 15th, 2024.   Paying homage to Carriacou’s rich boat-building history, A World Adrift features an awe-inspiring fleet of 30 boats, each helmed by a sculpture of a local school child from Grenada’s sister islands, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. These young captains symbolise resilience and hope in the face of climate change, representing those affected most, such as to Small Island Developing States like Grenada. Crafted from marine stainless steel and pH-neutral green cement, the boats resemble delicate paper origami, emphasising the fragility of the surrounding ecosystem. Positioned three to five metres deep on a barren stretch of sand, the installation is perfect for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts.   More than an artistic marvel, A World Adrift serves a crucial ecological purpose. A unique blend of artistry, environmental awareness, and marine conservation, each boat is designed to function as an artificial reef, providing shelter for marine life and boosting aquatic biodiversity. The sail ropes will double as coral nurseries, contributing to the restoration of nearby reefs.   This new installation builds upon the success of Grenada's first underwater sculpture park, the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park, also created by Jason deCaires Taylor in 2006. Located in the Molinere Beauséjour Marine Protected Area, this pioneering project sits at depths of five to eight metres. The Molinere Park, recently updated, set the stage for A World Adrift, cementing Grenada's position as a leader in innovative, eco-conscious tourism.   Petra Roach, CEO of the Grenada Tourism Association, comments: "We are thrilled to unveil A World Adrift, a testament to Grenada's commitment to innovative, sustainable tourism.
