British tourist missing after boat fire
A British tourist is missing after boat after a tourist boat was engulfed in flames off the Thailand coast.
A small boat was taking tourists on a diving excursion near Koh Tao.
Alexandra Clarke, 26 from London, is the only one missing after 20 other people were evacuated from the small boat.
It is thought she may have been in the bathroom at the time and was only found to be missing later.
Capt Natthaphon Sinpoonphon, the deputy director of the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre, said the boat was about six nautical miles away from Kao Tao when a fire broke out in the engine room.
It ‘spread through the boat rapidly.’
“Preliminary reports indicate that the engine room, captain’s cabin and rear restroom were damaged. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.”
Sinpoonphon added: “The search is continuing for one missing tourist, a female from the United Kingdom.”
“Search and rescue teams were immediately mobilised.”
The UK Foreign Office has been notified: “We are supporting the family of a British woman who is missing in Thailand and are in contact with local authorities.”
The boat was taking divers to a well known dive site in the area, when the fire broke out.
