100 murders prompt Mexican travel warnings
US officials renewed travel warnings to Mexico, noting there have been more than 100 murders since June.
A travel warning issued twice by Washington since the start of the year was renewed this week, said Tony Garza, the US Ambassador to Mexico.
He added that in addition to the 100 murders, 18 Nuevo Laredo policemen have been killed this year. He said:
“These disturbing reports make clear that Mexico needs to do much more to bring safety and security to our common border.”
Violence in Northern Mexico has soared this year, leaving at least 600 dead after President Vincente Fox launched a war on drugs.
Mr Fox sent hundreds of anti-drug troops to areas that included Nuevo Laredo, just south of Laredo, Texas. Some 30 Americans have been kidnapped there in the past few months.
