2008 Visitor Figures to Jamaica up by 4 per cent

The latest visitor figures to Jamaica demonstrate that the destination is as popular as ever despite competition from other Caribbean destinations and a challenging economic environment.

Visitor figures rose last year by 4 per cent, bringing the total number of visitors to the island to 1,769,271. British visitors also increased by 1.5 per cent compared to last year, totaling 188,436 arrivals.

Elizabeth Fox, Regional Director Jamaica Tourist Board, UK & N Europe commented:‘This steady increase is in-line with our predictions for the UK market and early indications for the year ahead are looking very positive. Flights, for example, over Easter into Montego Bay are fully booked already. The tour operators are offering some excellent deals for under £800 this month and with the vast choice of excellent all inclusive accommodation and exciting range of attractions Jamaica makes for a great holiday choice for families who are looking for value without skimping on the experience."

Other markets to see an increase include the USA who sent 1,150,942 visitors to the island last year, an increase of 1.6 per cent, Canada whose visitors increased by 23.9 per cent to 239,193 and Latin America which increased by 32.5 per cent – possibly influenced by the high level of Spanish investment taking place on the island.

The UK is Jamaica’s second most important market after North America and represents 10 per cent of market share.
