500 jobs to go at Heathrow
British Airways’ customer service staff at Heathrow have voted to accept new working practices at Heathrow, which will lead to 500 job cuts.
The deal, agreed with the United and GMB unions, covers 2,850 staff based at Terminals 3 and 5.
Three hundred of the job losses have already been achieved through voluntary redundancy and new opportunities for flexible working, according to BA.
BA chief executive, Willie Walsh, said: “This is another important step towards securing permanent structural change and the long term future of the company. It also underlines our commitment to working with all of our trade unions, including Unite. "
His comments came as Unite’s joint general secretary Tony Woodley publicly accused BA of trying to ‘smash trade unionism’.
His union might have reached a satisfactory deal for Heathrow ground staff, but Woodley this week called on all 30,000 Unite members working at BA to back cabin crew in their long-running dispute with the airline.
